Getting The Hospital Bag Ready - Preparing To Go To The Hospital: Diary of A New Mum

Since our doctor had told us that we would have a C-sec baby and there was no way of having a regular delivery, we were kind of in the know of the date when we would have the baby. There was a time frame of about a week that the doctor had told us would be ideal for the baby, but you can never really predict things a 100% accurately with a delivery involved.

Maternity Clothes and Fashion: What To Keep In Mind

Hey mumsies,

Was going through some stuff online and realised the huge change that's come over in the dressing sense of mums who are expecting babies - the way they dressed earlier to the way they dress now. While earlier, most mums in India would be hidden behind the saree or the salwar-kameez during those 'bump'y months, these days, it seems that mums love to flaunt the bump - and why not!

Showing off your bump in style is a great way to share this great news with those around, and of course to show off your 'to-be-pampered' state.......

With easy availability of maternity dresses these days - starting from your local shop to the nearest mall to the online selling portals that you can visit from the comfort of your bedroom - the designs and styles in maternity wear has gone up considerably.

Before we get into the style aspect, here are a few things to keep in mind while you are planning to buy some maternity wear:

Things To Know About Parenting Before Baby Arrives

(*image courtesy lifehacker - the author of this blog/post claims no rights to the image above)

Look at the image above. If you've seen many dazzling images of cherubic babies and are now expecting your own, this image is pretty much the closest that you'll be coming to during that cherubic phase, at least for the first year or so.

It's every parent's dream - but I think a little more of the mums' - to create and decorate that most beautiful room in the house - the BABY NURSERY!

Planning That Baby Shower Party: Some Things You May Like To Know

The stork has visited and it's time for a new member to pop up ...... ready for a party?

If you haven't heard of a baby shower party yet, don't worry. Many mums, especially Indian mums, still don't go for a celebratory baby shower party, as it is considered inappropriate in many Indian customs to celebrate baby's arrival pre-birth.

While the custom originally is that someone else should throw the baby shower party for you, it's absolutely fine if you plan your own and organise it. You don't need to wait those 9 months for someone to do it for you, it's entirely okay if you do it for yourself :-)

Decorating The Baby Nursery

One of the most fun and interesting part of becoming a parent is getting the nursery ready! Even before my little princess came to me, I knew I wanted a baby girl, so that I could dress her up in frills and laces and all things pink and pretty, and give her a room filled with soft cuddly toys, dolls and all the mini cutie things that I so loved staring at at the toys section in the stores.

Of course the nursery was made and of course my little baby didn't sleep in it :-) LOL! But in India, that's one thing that's really common in most homes. Babies always co-sleep with parents, and whatever research might say, Im a firm believer that a baby will always sleep best nestled close to its mother's heart, lying safely wrapped in mamma's arms. Of course SIDS is a reality we all need to be careful and alert about, but all said and done, I want my baby next to me when I am sleeping, and its vice versa. And let me confess something.....she is all of 5 now, and still sleeps with me :-) The nursery is more of her play room! I don't mind that at all.

I really cherish this frame. This is a fun thing me and my daughter were doing when she was about 3...and she was adamant that mamma's hands also have to be in this :-)

Vedic Chants For Your Unborn

There has been a sudden spate of new-born joys in my friend circle of late. A few of the celebrations have already been through, though of course the good cheer and sheer joy of having a new-born around is still brand new. Another very very dear friend is expecting to bring in her second angel this coming month....want to surely congratulate second-time soon-to-be mum Namita Lolge on her upcoming second joy :)

So I was chatting with my friends and that is when one of them told me about this pregnancy wellness audio that she was hooked on to during her pregnancy. Honestly, I never listened to any pregnancy audio while I was expecting my daughter, so I can really do not have an idea of how effective these are. But today, just on a lark, I decided to check out the audio she was talking about. She had mentioned it was in the voice of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and that it was extremely soothing and calming for her during those precious months. I searched a bit and found the exact audio she was talking about. Sharing the link here for other mums-to-be. All the best mommies :)

Enjoying While You Are Preggers.....

Girls, ladies, trust you me, these nine months are going to be the most blissful months you will ever have to yourself again……Yes, I am not trying to scare you or make you think twice about what lies ahead, what lies ahead is going to be beautiful and the best thing that could have ever happened to you. But what I am simply saying is this – that these 09 months of your first pregnancy is the last and most intimate time that you will have to call all yours, coz once the baby is out, all your time will be only for the baby.

Many women feel that the 09 months of their pregnancy are the best months. And they have some very good reasons for the same. There is so much pampering and attention and care and concern all centered around you that you will feel as if for these 09 months the only thing that others have to worry and think about is you.

Taking care of yourself during the pregnancy....

There are many things that we tend to do wrong while we are pregnant. Not consciously though. Most first time mothers these days have the responsibility of looking after themselves on their own. With the structure of the joint family already crumbling and not really welcome these days, the nuclear family has to fend for itself. Thus we are left with little or no advice, something that would have been abundant if we were to be surrounded by our elders.

Many women choose to call their mothers when they are pregnant. Some do it long-distance over the phone. Some mothers come and live with their expecting daughters, while some daughters move over to their maternal home for the delivery. A few women also go to their in-laws’ place or vice-versa.

But for those initial months, or rather, the major part of pregnancy, when we are on our own, there are a few very basic things that we can keep in mind to ensure the health of both us and our little one.

1. Eat well and do not skip meals. We have all skipped meals all our lives, especially breakfast, even though we all know by rote now that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you are pregnant, it is especially important that you eat well. What mothers and doctors say is true – that you are eating for two when you are pregs. Of course not literally, that is, if you are eating a plate of rice the baby will not get the nutritive value of the full plate of rice. But it will get its nutrition from what you need. And if you don’t eat well, chances are you may suffer fatigue and weakness, which can eventually affect baby. You don’t have to stuff yourself with food either. Just make sure you never go hungry.

2. Sleep on your left side. The doctor will tell you the same. Sleeping on your left side will ensure a better supply of blood to baby. This is good for baby’s development.

3. Remember what all food allergies you have and avoid them at all costs.

4. Alcohol and aerated drinks as well as smoking are a strict NO. Not even the tiniest sip of alcohol is permissible when you are pregnant. And not even that one drag on the stick.

5. Many doctors, as well as mothers, will tell you to stay away from fruits like papaya and pineapple. I am not really sure if all women are told the same thing, of course it might vary from woman to woman. But it is always better to avoid these fruits unless the doctors say otherwise.

6. Many, but not all women are also put off Chinese food as it contains a lot of ajinomoto and is said to be harmful for pregnancy. Check with your doctor about the same.

7. The pills you are given during pregnancy are almost always extremely bitter. But there is no excuse for you not to take them. It is extremely important that you religiously take each and every medicine that the doctor has prescribed. If the pills are too bitter, try and crush it and mix it with some honey or sugar (check with your doctor about the same). Or you can share your problem with them and ask if there is any substitute. If there is no other option, act like a mature adult and TAKE THE PILLS.

8. Milk milk and lots of milk. There is no beating about the bush here. Unless you are a person who suffers from lactose intolerance, you simply have to consume milk each day. At least two big cups of milk is what you should ideally be taking. But if you feel that is too much, or if you are unable to keep it down, try and take it in small sips in regular intervals. No amount of milk is too much during pregnancy. Have as much as you can, as it will be a great source of nourishment for both you and baby. Remember to boil the milk properly first and only then consume, unless it is from a carton that is already boiled.

9. Go easy on the oil. During these nine months, try and avoid as much oily and fried food as you can. Not only are these zero in nutritive value, having fried and too oily food during pregnancy leads to heartburn and acidity, which can be a huge source of discomfort.

10. Lie down, sleep, rest. As simple as it may sound, once the baby arrives, you will need all your time and energy to take care for the little one. As much as you sleep and rest now, the more your body will be able to refresh and energise itself, thus giving you a great boost to charge you up for the post-delivery days. Also, it is said (I am not sure if it is just a myth or a fact, but it happened in my case) that when the mother sleeps, the baby also sleeps, even in the womb. So it is said that if you sleep in the afternoon, even a small nap, your baby too will do the same, and the practice will continue even after birth. I never ever slept in the day, and now my daughter does not sleep either, try as hard as I might. Like I said, I don’t know if this is a myth or fact, but taking a nap can only be good for you, so go for it.

11. Try and establish a routine as much as you can. Try and wake up on time and try to keep your bed time at a decent hour. Going to bed too late will also lead to acidity and indigestion. Also, if you start getting into a routine now, chances are, it will become a part of your life once the baby arrives, and you will not have much trouble establishing a routine as your little one is growing up.

12. Dry fruits are a good source of nutrition. Keep a bowl of raisins, cashew nuts and almonds handy. When you feel the urge to munch on something but want to give meals or fruits a miss, snacking on these energy nuts will provide much energy and be filling as well.

13. Lifting heavy stuff is completely out of the question. You may feel fine and strong, but there is no guarantee that lifting something heavy will not affect the baby. Be safe and be smart and avoid it at all costs.

14. Each time you need to pick up something, remember to bend at your knees and not bend down over your back. Even if your tummy is not big by now, you are carrying your precious one inside you and you need to keep its safety in your mind at all times. Bend your knees slowly, if required, hold on to something for support, and only then pick up what you need. The tummy should not feel the pressure at any time.

Remember that every woman’s needs and likes and dislikes are different and it is wrong to compare yourself with other women who are pregnant. There may be many things that you do the same like them, as there may be many that you do completely differently. Unless you feel it is harming you or baby in some way, there is no need for concern. Keep talking to your gynae whenever you have an appointment and discuss your thoughts and fears freely. Remember, the more you talk to a doctor, the more sound and correct advice you are bound to get, which will ultimately be useful for your baby.

So take care, enjoy this attention phase and get ready for the biggest joy that is soon going to come your way.

What Happens Right Before The Little One Arrives?

So you are going to be a new mum and you have absolutely no idea what happens just before the baby is due? Of course you will have heard a million things from lots of people around you, and to confuse you more, all of them will give you a different idea of what you have heard from someone else.

Listening to so many accounts it may sound really scary and confusing. But trust me, it isn't as bad as many people make it look like.

A few things that all of us mostly hear as the date approaches near is that the process of delivery and the examinations that take place just before that are really uncomfortable and painful. But it is all a matter of how you handle the situation.

Having a baby need not necessarily mean an unbearably painful experience. Of course it is not a smile-and-wink thing, but then, once when you have your little one in your arms, all your pains and confusion will evaporate.

Before the baby arrives, one thing that you can do to ease your worries is to read up on some good pregnancy books. There are many books that will talk in a friendly and personal way of their own experiences. You can find a list of these books in this blog as well. This is the link:

http://mylittleoneandme-debolina-raja-gupta.blogspot.com/2010/06/so-you-are-carrying-most-precious.html

Many neighbourhoods have pregnancy groups that will help you connect with other pregnant women in your area.

Lamaze classes are another good option where you will get personal care and professional advice on what are the better ways to deliver your child.

Some women have a higher capacity to bear pain while others have less. Being confident and not worrying too much will help ease your pains to a big extent. Whenever you feel uncomfortable or feel a little pain, begin breathing in and out. This is also a good exercise that will help you if you have a natural delivery. Of course if the pain grows or you feel uncomfortable, be sure to get in touch with your doctor immediately.

A pregnancy involves many examinations, some that are painful and some that can feel really awkward and uncomfortable. But the key to make it easier for you is to think of this as a normal doctor-patient thing. And if the examination gets too uncomfortable or painful, start thinking of other things to take your mind off the same.

Natural deliveries are not always as painful as they are sometimes made out to be. Some women even wait during their labour pains, thinking the pain will grow to an unbearable extent after some time, but the little pain they experience is all that takes place and the baby is soon delivered. The best part of a natural delivery is that your healing process begins as soon as the baby is out. And most women are able to get back to their regular routine within a 2-3 days of the birth.

A C-sec operation involves a little more injections and examinations. Before the delivery you will be put on drip and no food or water allowed, as your body needs to prepare itself for the operation. These days you do not have to be completely unconscious for the operation, only the lower portion is made numb. At the operating table, you will be given a shot of injection that will make your legs and lower body numb. Some women need only one shot, others with a stronger resistance need more. The maximum that is given to the woman is three shots. I was given 3 shots as my body was still reacting to touch. But trust me, it is not at all scary or painful as you may have heard. It is just like any other injection, only in your spine. And there are not any side effects either, I never had any problem later.

In a C-sec delivery, the healing time is longer, almost 2 months. It takes almost that much time for your stitches to heal completely. These days the cut that is done for the baby to be brought out is really small, a little cut just above your feminity. You need to be careful for the next two months, do not bend down, do not pick anything that is heavy, do not take any back massage, do not lie down on your tummy, and always while walking try to keep support under your tummy by keeping a hand there. There are many more tips that can be shared, I will come back to that later.

Most of the pain and the discomfort that is associated with child-birth these days is all in your own head. Technology has advanced a lot and hospitals and staff too have a much better way of handling deliveries these days.

Relax, take a deep breath and go into your delivery room with a smile on your face. I was constantly chatting with my doctor while they were operating me, in the end they had to scold me to keep quiet. Be happy and positive about the birth and most of your pain and discomfort will vanish. Of course, the little one who will arrive in just a few more minutes or hours (depending on the form of birth) will take away all your pain for all your life.

All the best and wishing the new family a very happy journey together :))

Knowing You Are Pregnant !!!!

Of all the women out there who became pregnant at some time or the other, not all realised they were pregnant immediately. In most cases, the pregnancy went undetected for the first one or two months.

Of course there are many ways by which your body tells you that you are carrying a little one inside, and there are tests available in the market too that let you check the same. But in reality, even when we might find something amiss, we do not always realise that one fact that is going to bulge out pretty soon anyway - that we are pregnant!!!!

When I conceived I didn't realise it for almost a month and a half. The usual lifestyle carried on and I was oblivious to the fact of a new life getting shape within. It was a mix of a few signs that eventually led me to a test:

Where To Give Birth.....

Which is the best place for you to give birth?

That is a question you can best answer yourself. There are so many options available today for an expecting couple that if I start to jot them all down now, there would hardly be space for anything else in this article at all.

Earlier there weren’t so many choices available. All you had to do was register your name with a nearby hospital and reach there as soon as the water broke, or, if you were one of those rare patients to have been recommended an operation baby, reach there on time.

Today the choices are vast. You have your regular hospitals, your five-star style hospitals, your nursing homes, your super-stylish nursing homes, clinics that are equipped to handle deliveries, private homes that have in-house medical teams and where you and one or more member from your family can live for all of your last trimester till the baby arrives!!!! and more…..

The choice is yours……

But some of the key things you need to keep in mind are:
The distance to the hospital from where you are staying
How helpful the staff is
Do a little research and get to know the reputation of this particular institute
If you have an insurance will it cover this hospital
Are the doctors friendly and good
Is the place hygienic
Will the room where you will stay after the delivery be clean and will there be enough staff available to attend to multiple post-natal cases
Check the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) to see how hygienic it is and how is the staff here, as many babies are placed in the NICU right after birth
What are the emergency admission procedures
If you can, have a word with someone who has given birth at this place so that you know how well trained and well-equipped the doctors and nurses are.

REMEMBER to register your name with the hospital or institute of your choice well in advance. Many places take bookings as early as 5 months before the baby is due. Check with your doctor and they will advise and help you accordingly.

Selecting The Right Doctor For You and Your Little One

Selecting the right doctor for you and your little one:

One of the most important and critical decisions that you make during your pregnancy is selecting a doctor for you and your little one. From the moment you break the good news that you are expecting, you will receive countless recommendations from family and friends. It is of course necessary that you take into consideration the experiences and recommendations from people you know, but don’t blindly select a doctor just because your sister or your best friend told you to. After all, a doctor who was great for a friend may not be as perfect for you.

When To Start Your Family

This is one of the questions that many couples face at some stage in their relationship:

What is the ideal time to start a family?

Every couple has its own understanding and circumstances and no one can tell you the perfect time to have a baby than you and your partner.

For many couples, the best time to have a baby is as soon as they are settled in a relationship. Some couples believe that the next step after getting married is to have a baby and start a family. Some believe in giving each other some quality time and then starting a family. Others believe in giving themselves time to achieve their professional goals and then start a family. Some couples might have other points on the agenda like purchasing a house first and then having a baby. There are factors at play in every couple’s life that decide which is the best time for them to start thinking of having a baby.

Here are a few points that may help you in making a decision:

1.Money is important. Having a newborn in the family needs to be backed up by some financial stability. Once your pregnancy is confirmed, you will be spending as much time in the doctor's office and lab as much as you spend in your own home. You dont have to be the richest person around, but it is always better to have your finances in control, rather than be in a situation where you are in a long debt or are in-and-out of jobs. The innumerable tests, the doctor visits, the medicines, the hospitalisation, not to mention other miscellaneous costs, all this will result in a big fat bill. Of course one of the first things you need to also check is to talk to your medical insurance guy. So one thing you always need to ask yourself and talk with your partner is whether you are financially settled to take the responsibility of a newborn.

2.Time is important. A newborn requires ALL your time and attention, not to mention your constant love. Will you be able to devote the time and attention that a newborn requires? If you need to be away from home for some time, will your partner be ready to take the responsibility of the baby? If you are a working woman, will your job profile allow you to be away from work for two-three months? How much time will your partner be able to devote to the baby?

3. Getting professional care for your little one. Have you thought of any outside help for your baby if you or your partner are occupied with something? If you are going to keep some help at home for the baby, have you checked the kinds of nannies available in your area? Are they reliable? Are they safe and hygienic? Will you be comfortable leaving your little one alone with this person? If you need any extra help, do you have family or friends who can help? If you are planning to become a working mother, are there good day-care centres near your home or work place?

4.Check your own health first. Are you medically fit to have a baby? Before you plan a baby, it is mandatory that you and your partner run a series of tests. Check with a gynaecologist who will refer you the tests that need to be carried out. Talk to your respective parents to know of any illness in the family and any illness that you may have had as a child.

5.Check your emotional compatibility and your thoughts about when to have the baby. Are you and your partner both on the same thought level here or is it only one of you who wants a baby? Never rush into having a baby just because your partner wants it. You need to want to be a parent as much and this holds true for both the partners. Are you mentally and emotionally prepared to become a parent? If you are a working woman, are you going to quit your job on your own for the baby or is it a pressure from the spouse? If you are a working woman and are planning to stay at home after the baby, are you mentally prepared and happy about this new phase of your life? If you are the man, are you ready for this change in your life right now, are you sure you will be able to comfortably handle the responsibility of looking after a newborn, both economically as well as emotionally? Remember, the mother is the most vital person in a newborn's life, but the father is equally important too.

Having a baby is one of the best experiences of your life. A baby not only brings joy to everyone around, it will also make your life special each day in a new way. Make sure that both you and your partner are aligned to the idea of having a child. Remember, a baby is completely dependent on your love and care and attention. And it is your responsibility to make sure that your baby receives your complete love and care. If there is any doubt in your mind about having a baby now, talk to your partner and try to resolve your issues. It is always better to plan first and then have a baby, rather than have a baby and then regret having what is so pure and adorable. There is nothing as the perfect time or the wrong time to have a baby, so decide for yourself what is ‘your’ time to have a baby.

Questions You May Have About the Expected Little One: Diary of A New Mum

You are about to become a parent, or planning to start a family, and there are a million questions running about in your head right now.

Starting from when is the right time to start a family, to who would be the best doctor for your little one and you, to which would be the ideal place to give birth, how will you learn to take care of an infant, what happens right before the baby arrives, how will you take care of yourself, how will you handle the mood changes and the mood swings, can you be close to your partner physically while you are pregnant, how will you ever be able to strike a balance between baby and hubby, will life ever get back to what and how it was before, will you be able to get back to work, what to eat while feeding, how will you lose the baby weight, how to feed baby, what to give the baby once the initial feeding days are over, what check-ups baby needs, how to encourage your baby towards the various milestones it will eventually achieve, how to get the father involved in child-care, how to make your home baby-safe, what is a good time to have a sibling, how to make sure you are caring for your baby in the right way but at the same time not overdoing it….well, these are just a handful of the many questions you will be facing right now…and it’s only natural.

Every parent, especially the would-be mother, faces a time when she wants to know what it will be like when the baby arrives. Being pregnant, and giving birth to your little one, is something that cannot be explained - it can only be experienced - and no words are good enough to tell you the feeling that becoming a mother brings to a woman. For the father, it will be an experience he will cherish and love the most for the rest of his life.

Planning a baby is something that needs to be discussed between both the adults involved. It is a lifelong commitment and both you and your partner need to have the same thought process to plan a baby. There are many things that need to be taken into account before you start a family, and once the baby arrives, there are a million more things that you will need to keep yourself updated about, a million things that you will need to check on and keep in mind. But the best part about being a parent is that you learn everything hands-on. Since being a parent is a 24*7 on-job training, you will learn and experience new things each moment of your parenthood. Of course the advice from friends and family and the many things that you read about parenting are also extremely helpful, they will give you an idea of what to expect and how to deal with things. But how to deal with your little one is something that you will learn as you grow as a parent with your child, no one can be a better judge of your baby’s needs than you, and it will be your mother’s instincts that will guide you on many occasions.

Right now you will feel confused, scared perhaps at the new responsibility, and also curious to know what lies ahead. So let’s slow down a little and take each question and thought one at a time. It is okay to experience confusion and helplessness at this stage. Be sure to discuss all your concerns with your partner. Sometimes, a good talk with your loved one will go a long way in relieving many of the stress. Be happy and start enjoying the feeling, and soon you will see this joy reflected in your little one as well.

Things You Will Need For Baby right after Birth

The biggest urge to shop for the soon-to-arrive bundle is strongest during the final months... You have resisted shopping till now, but as the day is coming nearer and you know that your mobility is somewhat going to be restricted for the first few days or weeks, you want to stock up on everything for the little one. It is an awesome experience to shop for your infant, but sometimes, we end up with goods that will have no use for the first few months, that looked great in the shop but are a total waste of money and space back home. Of course the hormones and the motherly affection and concern and the salesman's skills are all partly to blame, but here is a list of a few things you would actually need once the baby has arrived:

1. Baby lotion, baby powder, baby cream, baby shampoo, nappy rash cream. You may also go for a top-to-toe baby wash that can be used on the head as well as the body. And yes, go for the No-Tears wash. No-Tears sure says it is okay if the soap goes in your baby's eyes, but it is always advisable to not let any form of soap get in your little one's eyes. Some of the best names in the market in baby cosmetics today are Johnson's, Himalaya, Mother Care and Pigeon. Check what suits your baby's skin and your pocket.

2. You will need to stock up on loads and loads of cloth nappies. During the first few days you will have to discard the nappy each time after it gets soiled. Go for pure cotton nappies as these are best for baby's tender skin. Earlier these were made at home by hand but these days nappies are available in all baby stores. These are much more easier to use and much better in quality too.

3. Dettol. You need to disinfect all of baby's clothes with the antiseptic.

4. Baby thermometer. The latest in the market is a strip that needs to be placed on baby's forehead for as little as 15 seconds to see the temperature. This is available in the Mother Care brand as far as I know and costs approx Rs.300. / and does not require any batteries. You can also go for the digital thermometers that come with small cells and are much more affordable.

5. Baby dresses. Only buy in pure cotton for summers. Go for the ones which have buttons in the front as buttons in the back are uncomfortable for baby to sleep and can hurt their skin. Avoid any kind of fancy stuff.

6. Baby bed linen. You usually get a full set that comprises of a sheet, a night suit, a cap, small pillow and a spread. Also, buy a baby comforter or blanket as per the weather.

7. Antiseptic cream for baby.

8. Baby booties and mittens.

9. Baby nail-cutters, preferably the ones with soft edges. You will be surprised to see how soon the nail growth takes place in babies. You trim baby's nails and they will be back to their sharp and grown stage within 3-4 days!

10. Infant/Baby diapers. For the first few weeks you will need to take baby for regular check-ups. Doctors will advise you to put them in a diaper during such visits.

11. Baby carrier.

12. Dim lights. With a new-born in the room you would require to have some light on even when it's goodnight time.

13. Baby scrap-book. Get this if you want to keep a track of your little one from the time of birth.

14. Sanitizer. You would need a big bottle of sanitizer right after baby's birth as relatives and well-wishers begin to pour in and you would want them to first clean their hands.

15. Baby cot. You may not make baby sleep in the cot during the night, in most Indian households, babies always sleep together in the same bed with their parents. But during the day, when you are busy in other work or when you need your own rest, it is a good idea to keep baby in the baby cot during sleep time. This will also help baby sleep better.

16. Baby wipes. These will be your saviour for atleast the next 3-4 years. A few good brands are Johnson's, Mother Care, Himalaya.

17. Last and one of the most important on the list - A BABY NAME !!! :D
