Teaching Your Child About The Importance of Time

Telling your children about the importance of time is something that probably all parents face at one time or the other. All said and done, as parents or even as grown ups, we too probably are not able to always utilise time in the best possible ways.

The war against time usually begins right in the morning, when you start waking them up for school. From then its a constant battle that goes on the most part of the day.

Learning to adjust your schedule according to time is one of the most important things you need to teach your child as a parent. It is something that will help them lead a disciplined life and help them be more effective with their studies and activities. It will also be good for them in the long run. Adjusting and working within time will help them through their adult years as well.

There are various ways in which you can teach your child the value of time and help them work around it.

Helping your child to value time:

  • Make them understand reason: Most grown ups wrongly believe that their kids will not understand reasoning. This is not true. Children have an innate sense of understanding. You need to talk to them in a way that feels grown up to them, yet explains matters in a way that is easy for them to understand. Tell them how doing things on time will help them plan their things better.
  • Hand out time related responsibilities: Let your child handle certain responsibilities that need them to keep the timing in mind. A simple way to do this is to ask them to wake up to the alarm each day on their own. Another way to do this is to tell them a pre-decided bed time, where the child should surely finish dinner on time and be in bed by then.
  • Teach them to read time: This is of course important, as otherwise your child may not be able to understand the dynamics at all. Get them a watch, one with an analog face to help them learn to read it. If your child is going out to play, tell them the time by which they need to be back home. This is a good way for them to start reading the time and to keep the timing in mind.
  • Managing time: Certain activities like packing the school bag according to the time table the previous night is a good way to help them understand the value of time. By doing this, you are teaching your kids to plan in advance and not wait till the last moment. Packing the bag at night instead of in the morning is a good way to capitalise on time. Tell them how it helps.
These simple ways are great to inculcate the beginning of time management in your child.
